Condition & Grading Guide
Good cameras deserve clear descriptions. Read the exterior, optics, function and included-item notes for the actual item, alongside its photographs.
How to read our condition labels
These labels explain the vocabulary used in our listings. They are descriptive summaries, not an industry certification or a substitute for individual notes. A high cosmetic grade does not mean an item has been overhauled or film-tested. Disclosed defects always take priority.
| Label | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Unused / Top Mint | Unused is used only where stated in the individual listing. Top Mint describes the highest listed cosmetic category; it does not mean factory-new or sealed. |
| Mint | Minimal visible signs of use as described and photographed. Check optical and functional notes separately. |
| Near Mint | Light signs of use, such as small scuffs. Any optical or functional exceptions are listed separately. |
| Excellent (legacy Exc+5 / Exc+4) | Visible signs of use. The older Exc+5 and Exc+4 labels are descriptive and are not a numerical condition score. |
| As-Is / Untested | Operation is unverified or specific faults are disclosed. Read the stated limitations before ordering; ask if anything is unclear. |
Five areas to check
- Exterior and identification: wear, finish, engravings and recorded serial numbers. Repainted items are identified where known.
- Viewfinder and optics: haze, fungus, separation, scratches, dust and rangefinder visibility where described.
- Controls: focus, aperture and other operational observations.
- Shutter and film transport: only the checks explicitly stated on the listing are confirmed. Do not infer calibrated shutter measurements, fresh light seals or film testing.
- Included items and records: caps, cases, boxes, papers and documented service history. A box or warranty card does not prove matching originality or current manufacturer coverage.
Actual examples from the collection
Our photographs show individual items, rather than stock examples of a grade. Compare the notes and photographs on Rolleiflex 2.8F, reference 277447, Nikon F4S with disclosed LCD leakage, reference 277542, and untested Rolleiflex 3003, reference 277602. These examples demonstrate why the item notes matter more than a label.
Real-item photo examples
These photographs show individual items already listed in our collection. They illustrate our listing vocabulary; they are not a new inspection, certification or a promise that every item with a label has the same condition. A photograph cannot establish shutter accuracy or rule out an optical fault. Read the complete notes for each item.

Top Mint example
Reference 277612. Listed as Top Mint; this does not mean unused or factory-new. Check the full optical, functional and included-item notes.

Mint example
Reference 277530. The listing records minimal signs of use and a few small dust particles in the lens. A high cosmetic label does not mean a dust-free optical system.

Near Mint example
Reference 277447. The listing records small scuffs and signs of use, with a few small dust particles in the lens. Service history is not documented.

Excellent example (legacy Exc+5)
Reference 276570. The listing records scuffs and fungus-removal marks in the finder. The disclosed optical issue takes priority over the condition label.

As-Is / Untested example
Reference 277602. The dedicated battery pack is missing, so operation could not be verified. The focus ring is stiff. A clean exterior does not establish working condition.
