Why condition notes matter more than a grade

“Mint” and “Near Mint” are convenient summaries. They are not complete descriptions of an old mechanical or electronic object.

Read three separate stories

The exterior describes visible wear. Optical notes describe the glass and finder. Functional notes describe the observations recorded for the controls and operation. An attractive finish cannot answer all three questions.

Look for exceptions first

Our Nikon F4S reference 277542 has disclosed LCD leakage. The Nikon DE-2 finder reference 277271 has a crack at the upper eyepiece. The Rolleiflex 3003 reference 277602 lacks its dedicated battery pack and its operation could not be verified. These facts carry more weight than a cosmetic label.

Match the item to your use

A collector seeking a display example and a photographer planning a trip may need different evidence. Tell us what matters to you. Ask whether a particular function was checked and whether there is documentation of service or testing. Where the record is silent, treat the answer as unverified.

Read our condition guide and use the item reference when contacting us.
