Boxes, papers and the limits of provenance

A box, instruction booklet or old warranty card can make a camera or lens more interesting to own. Each is also a separate piece of evidence that deserves its own questions.

Included is different from verified original

The Leica Summilux M 50mm reference 277530 lists a hood, case and box alongside caps and a filter. That tells you what is supplied. It does not establish that every item left the factory together or that the box has a matching serial number.

Ask what a document establishes

A service invoice may identify a date, serial number, workshop and work performed. An old warranty card may simply be part of the supplied papers. It does not by itself establish current manufacturer coverage. Ask for a readable photograph if a document influences your decision.

Keep the history with the item

Save the listing, your purchase invoice and any service documents you receive. If you later have work performed, keep a dated record linked to the serial number. A clear file of known facts is more useful than an attractive but unsupported story.

Ask us about the documents supplied with an individual item.
